“We played it ninety times. Mum still thinks that summer sounded like the lawnmower.”
It is the sound of the summer: a prized Oasis tape, played on a loop, just loud enough for the garden. For three months, Mum keeps telling the neighbours how much she loves the hum of a freshly serviced lawnmower. But what happens when she finally comes outside to listen?
“For a whole summer... they thought it was the lawnmower.”
From the back cover
Some summers have a soundtrack. This one has exactly ten songs on a tape, played over and over again from a bedroom window.
Down in the garden, Mum thinks the music is just the lawnmower doing its thing. The neighbours think she's mowing the lawn ninety times a day. And the kids? The kids just keep pressing rewind, blissfully unaware that grown-ups have ears.
